Volunteer for the Y12k
The Y12K needs your help! If you are not up for running on Saturday, November 14th, but would still like to be involved in this inaugural event, consider becoming one of our volunteers. Download and fill out the application form »
We Need 150 Volunteers!
We are looking for all types (including groups!), but please be aware that all race-day volunteer positions will require you to be on your feet for up to six (6) hours and may require moderate lifting (up to 50lbs). All positions on the race day will be outside, so please dress accordingly. All volunteers will receive a WHYY tee shirt, but please plan on wearing longer layers underneath as needed.
Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by a parent. All volunteers will be asked to sign a waiver and release for their participation in the event.
Volunteer training will take place Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 7:00PM at the WHYY Technology Center, 150 N. 6th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. You must be able to attend the training session to be a Y12K volunteer.
Volunteer Assignments
The following is a list of projected volunteer needs for the Y12K. While you may request a certain "job" on your application form, you may be reassigned as needed on the day of the event. We will make every effort to place you where you will be most effective.

Pre-Event Packet Pick-Up
Includes: Setting up packet pick-up table (first shift), handing out packets and other literature, registering runners, answering runner questions, cleaning up table and preparing for the next day (last shift).

All Race-Day Volunteers are to report to the registration area
(Martin Luther King Jr. Drive at the Art Museum) at 6:00 A.M.
All volunteers should plan on remaining until the event closes a 12:00PM.
Set-Up
Includes: Setting up tents, tables and chairs, hanging banner and signs, setting up registration/check-in area, gear check and Y Kids Fun Fitness Zone (will be assigned to other areas once set-up is complete).
10 Volunteers
Registration/Packet Pick-Up
Includes: Setting up packet pick-up table, handing out packets and other literature, answering runner questions, cleaning up table and assisting with event clean-up.
4 Volunteers
Gear Storage
Includes: Gear-check for runners, taking bags, keeping bags in a neat and organized fashion throughout the event, returning bags to runners at the end of the event.
8 Volunteers
Food Tent/Post-Race Runner Refreshment
Includes: Setting up and staffing the post race runner refreshment area. Handing refreshments to runners.
10 Volunteers
Y Kids Family Fit Zone
Includes: Assisting in set up and tear down of Fit Zone and managing Fit Zone family activities. Also may be asked to appear as a costumed character for periods during the event (costumes provided by WHYY).
15 Volunteers
Race Course - Starting Line
Includes: Assisting in the start of runners in both the 12K and 3K races.
4 Volunteers
Race Course - Turn Around
Includes: On location at the turn-around point near the Falls Bridge for the 12K and the turn-around point for the 3K, directing runners and communicating with finish line, cheering runners on.
4 Volunteers
Race Course - Water Station
Includes: Setting up and tearing down water station, filling water cups, handing cups to runners.
40 Volunteers
Tear-Down
Includes: Tearing-down the entire event, including picking up trash and packing up gear. All race-day volunteers will assist with the tear-down of the event.
