Sixth Annual Wider Horizons Forum:
Pain Management at the End of Life

WHYY Wider Horizons and its Caring Community coalition hosted an all-day forum for professionals and community members on pain management at the end of life. Topics include the spiritual and psychic dimensions of suffering and clinical and alternative approaches to managing pain.


In the afternoon, WHYY was a downlink site for the Hospice Foundation of America's Thirteenth Annual Live-Via-Satellite Teleconference, which will present Pain Management at the End of Life: Bridging the Gap Between Knowledge and Practice.(CE credits available see below).


Co-sponsored by NASW, Pennsylvania Chapter, Philadelphia Division and Bayhealth Medical Center.

Suffering and Soul Pain
Helen Black PhD,
Senior Research Scientist, Center for Applied Research on Aging and Health, College of Health Professions, Thomas Jefferson University and author of the new book, Soul pain: The meaning of suffering in later life.


Clinical Management of Pain
Rosemary Polomano RN, PhD, Associate Professor of Pain Practice at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and a Clinician Educator at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Polomano has extensive clinical experience in management of both acute and chronic pain and lectures throughout the country on these topics.


Panel Discussion: Alternative Approaches to Pain Management

Hospice Foundation of America Thirteenth Annual Live-Via-Satellite Teleconference Pain Management at the End of Life: Bridging the Gap between Knowledge and Practice
An expert panel will identify barriers to effective pain control, discuss ethical issues such as terminal sedation, current and prospective ways to assess and manage pain and the role of professionals in managing pain.

This workshop was co-sponsored by NASW-PA Chapter, Philadelphia Division for 3 CE credits for social workers. NASW has been designated as a pre-approved provider of professional continuing education for social workers (Section 47.36) by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.

Continuing education credits (three contact hours) for the afternoon Hospice Foundation of America Live-Via-Satellite Teleconference were available by boards in most states for nurses, counselors, social workers, nursing home administrators, funeral directors, clergy, emergency services personnel, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, and employee assistance professionals. This year, participants completed an online application for continuing education credit after the Forum. Instructions were distributed at the Forum.
