To enhance end-of-life and caregiver outreach through educational programming and supportive services especially through multimedia including radio, television and the Web.
Caring Community is a volunteer coalition convened by WHYY, comprised of more than 100 partners representing nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, government agencies, faith-based organizations and health care systems in the region. The collaborative effort evolved from WHYY's work with community outreach around the national broadcast of Bill Moyers' series On Our Own Terms, which started a national conversation about end-of-life issues.
Caring Community provides a much-needed forum for professionals and the public to explore issues related to end-of-life care, with special attention to the needs of caregivers. Outreach efforts include workshops, symposia, information and referral services, web-based resources, and audio and video programming. The unique partnering of a public broadcasting station with the coalition provides access to innovative technology to reach greater numbers of people in creative ways.
Successes
Wider Horizons and Caring Community were awarded the 2005 Community Partnership Award by the National Center for Outreach. The award honors a PBS station and a local community organization for their sustainable and outstanding partnership, whose collaborative contributions and efforts exceed goals and expectations that impact the community.
WHYY and Caring Community received two major grants from Sound
Partners for Community Health, a national project
of the Benton Foundation, funded by The RobertWood
Johnson Foundation to produce Circle
of Love and Circle
of Care.
The coalition's community-based outreach includes a collaboration in 2001 with The Philadelphia Inquirer, which carried the 15-part Knight-Ridder series Finding Our Way: Living with Dying in America with sidebars of related resources complied by Caring Community and a four-part Community Voices series, Death and Dying.
In 2002, Wider Horizons was the media partner for the National Family Caregivers Association and webcast a series of town meetings across the country, with guidance in coalition-building for each region provided by Caring Community.
WHYY and Caring Community were selected together as one of four projects nationwide by Last Acts, a national coalition to improve care and caring near the end of life, for its Model Programs Project.
