Nichole Canuso Dance Company

Produced by Karen Smyles

This month Art of Life places the spotlight on dancer/choreographer, Nichole Canuso. A native Philadelphian, Nichole was lured into the arts by her father's work in the theater. Surrounded by his actor and dancer friends at a young age, she says it was just a matter of time before she began choreographing her own productions on the neighbourhood kids.

In 2004 Nichole founded Nichole Canuso Dance Company which presents works that exist at the crossroads of theater, dance and visual art. The goal is to reach out to the fertile artistic community of Philadelphia and it's diverse audiences. This is accomplished through collaborations with other artists like a theater director and set designer in Fail Better, a rock band in The Mural and the Mint, a filmmaker in Drafting, and all of the above for Wandering Alice. In our segment you meet the artist who is also collaborating with Nichole in her personal life, husband Michael Kiley.

Nichole is also a company member of Headlong Dance Theater and has performed and collaborated with Pig Iron Theater Company, with which she co-created and toured a 3 woman clown play. She has also worked with Theater Exile, Karen Bamonte Dance Works, and Group Motion Dance Company. In 2008 Canuso performed with Bill Irwin in THE HAPPINESS LECTURE at the Philadelphia Theater Company. As a dancer and choreographer Nichole has travelled throughout France, Scotland, Poland, Japan and across the U.S., and has received numerous awards.

Musician Michael Kiley

Michael Kiley is a singer/songwriter/musician and founder of the free music project The Mural and The Mint. Much of the music you hear in our Art of Life segment with Nichole Canuso is from their recordings. The group's name is attributed to the City of Philadelphia being home to more murals than any other city in the country, and to the Franklin Mint. The Mural and The Mint is dedicated to releasing all of their work for free and you can listen to more of it on their website. It's FREE!!!
