WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 5 - TORNADOES SPAWNED BY HURRICANE DAVID
Tornadoes originate from strong thunderstorms. Thus, because tropical storms
and hurricanes are just clusters of thunderstorms, it's possible for tornadoes
to form during a tropical storm or hurricane. And that's exactly what happened
on this date in 1979 as the remnants of Hurricane David passed through this area.
David began its
destructive path in the
Caribbean with
150-mph winds. But by
the time it reached us, David was just a fast-moving tropical storm with maximum
winds around 50 mph. However, David's thunderstorms spawned
four tornadoes in
this area. One tornado 200 yards wide with winds that topped 100 mph traveled
three miles through New Castle county, ripping several homes apart near Claymont.
In Pennsylvania, tornadoes touched down in Chester and Berks counties, while a
fourth twister struck Cape May County in New Jersey. All told, the tornadoes
caused one fatality, ten injuries, and several million dollars in property damage.
So even though we don't usually associate the two, history has demonstrated
that a hurricane can spawn a tornado.
