WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 24 - WIND ENERGY, PART I
Earlier today, on a ridge-top in southwestern Pennsylvania, wind-powered energy
took another step forward with the dedication of two new "wind farms" that will
produce enough electricity to run 8,000 homes.
One of the wind farms is in Somerset county, where six wind turbines overlook one
of the highest points along the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The
other sits more than 2500
feet above sea level along a strip of pastureland on Laurel Mountain, just miles from
Frank Lloyd Wright's world-famous Fallingwater. There, ten turbines whirl atop towers
that reach 230 feet into the air.
The electricity produced at the Laurel Mountain wind farm and at an even larger one
planned near Scranton, PA, already has a market. Exelon, which was formed last year
following the merger of Philadelphia-based Peco Energy and Chicago's Unicom Corporation,
will buy the wind-produced electricity for the next 20 years.
