TUESDAY OCTOBER 2 - SHINE ON HARVEST MOON

Aside from romance, the moon is one of the most sung-about themes. And arguably, one of the most popularized of all moon songs of the 20th century is "Shine On Harvest Moon," which was written in 1903.

So what is the "Harvest Moon?" There's a full moon approximately every 29 days or so, and these full moons have been given names over the years. The Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the first day of fall, the so-called autumnal equinox. Often this full moon occurs in September, but this year the harvest moon is today, October 2. Traditionally, the Harvest Moon was a signal that it was time to start the last work of the year in the fields, with the added illumination from the full moon allowing harvesting to continue late into the night.

Full moons at other times of the year have names as well: for example, the February full moon is the "Snow Moon" or "Hunger Moon," while the April full moon is the "Pink Moon" or the "Planter's Moon."
