THURSDAY MARCH 28 - MARCH MADNESS
I know that some of you will disagree with me, but for this sports fan,
"March Madness" is the best time of the year. Filling out my brackets got me
thinking about college teams with weather-related nicknames.
As it turns out, of approximately 320 NCAA Division One schools, I counted just
four with what I would consider weather-related nicknames. And coincidentally,
all four made it to the Big Dance this year: on the men's side, we had the
Hurricanes of Miami-Florida and the Golden Hurricane of the University of Tulsa,
as well as the Rainbows of the University of Hawaii. In the ladies' tournament,
weather was represented by the Cyclones of Iowa State.
There are many smaller colleges and universities that also have weather-related
nicknames: these include the Tornadoes of Talladega College in Alabama, the
Lightning of Lehman College in The Bronx, the Thunder of Wheaton College in Illinois,
and my favorite - the Dustdevils of Texas A&M International University in Laredo.
