WEDNESDAY JULY 31 - 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF A DELAWARE TORNADO
There haven't been many strong tornadoes reported in Delaware. In fact, in the last 50 years, only a dozen twisters in the whole state have been ranked F2 or higher on the Fujita Scale, meaning winds of at least 113 mph.
One of the most recent F2 tornadoes occurred in Kent County exactly ten years ago today. The tornado, only about 20 yards wide, touched down around 630pm south of Dover near the intersection of Routes 12 and 15. It moved eastward for about 4 miles, crossing Route 1 north of Frederica before dissipating. Nobody was injured, but the twister caused a quarter-million dollars of property damage.
There was also a second, weaker tornado that evening in Kent County around 6pm near the Delaware/Maryland border. This one was only ten yards wide, stayed on the ground for about a mile, and did $25,000 in damage.
