THURSDAY JULY 19 - DELAWARE WEATHER ANNIVERSARIES ON JULY 21
If you look hard enough, you can find some sort of unique weather from the past
for just about any calendar day. This Saturday, July 21, however, really stands out
for two extreme weather events in the state of Delaware.
First, on July 21, 1930, the temperature reached 110oF in Millsboro, in Sussex
County about 10 miles southeast of Georgetown. That reading of 110 remains to this
day the highest temperature ever officially recorded in the state of Delaware.
Second, on July 21, 1983, a small tornado with winds between 113 and 157 mph
touched down briefly near Hartly, about 10 miles west of Dover. Though the tornado
was only about 20 yards wide and on the ground for just a mile, it destroyed two
trailer homes, injuring nine people and causing two fatalities. This is the last
time a tornado fatality occurred in the state of Delaware, and one of only two
times in the last century.
