THURSDAY JULY 18 - HOTTEST DAY ON RECORD IN DELAWARE
Millsboro is a small community of around 1800 residents in southern Delaware. On the banks of the Indian River in Sussex County, it's about ten miles south of Georgetown along U.S. Highway 113.
Though Millsboro is perhaps best known for hosting the world-famous, highly competitive Punkin' Chunkin' Championships each year, we meteorologists know of it for another reason. On July 21, 1930, an official weather observer in Millsboro measured a high temperature of 110oF, still the record for the highest temperature ever officially observed in the state of Delaware. For comparison, the highest temperature ever officially recorded in Wilmington is 107oF, in August 1918.
Millsboro's brush with weather history doesn't end there. Millsboro also holds the Delaware state record for lowest temperature ever recorded: -17oF in 1893. This gives Millsboro the distinction of being the only place in the country that single-handedly holds both its state high temperature and low temperature records.
