THURSDAY JANUARY 24 - BENJAMIN FRANKLIN CELEBRATIONS
One week ago today was
Benjamin Franklin's 296th birthday. And in fitting tribute,
there were two major Franklin-related events in the area.
First, this year marks the 250th anniversary of Franklin's invention of the
lightning rod. This was commemorated with a seminar by one of the world's
leading experts on lightning and thunderstorm electricity,
Dr. Philip Krider of
the University of Arizona.
Second, a group of leading Franklin-related institutions based in Philadelphia
announced that a new traveling exhibit called "The Creation of Benjamin Franklin,
American Citizen of the World," is planned for completion in November 2005,
just in time for Franklin's 300th birthday. The participating institutions are:
The Franklin Institute, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the University of
Pennsylvania, the American Philosophical Society, and the Library Company
of Philadelphia, the latter two founded by Franklin himself.
