TUESDAY JANUARY 15 - RECORD-SETTING LATE FIRST SNOW

We didn't get our first official snow of the winter in Wilmington and Philadelphia until last week. That sets a new record for latest in the season. The previous record was December 27, back in 1990.

Part of the reason for snow's tardiness this winter is simply that November and December were too warm most of the time, with November above average by 6.5oF and December by nearly 8oF!

More important, though - there just haven't been many storms. Here's a look at the percentage of average precipitation that's fallen in the last 90 days in each county. Most numbers are below 50%, a significant deficit considering that we're talking about a three-month period. We're still in a drought emergency as declared by the Delaware River Basin Commission because the reservoirs of the Delaware River, located in New York State, are only at about 40% of their normal levels for this time of year.
