TUESDAY JANUARY 8 - FIFTEEN-DAY FORECASTS?
Recently, some weather services are offering ten and even fifteen-day detailed
weather forecasts on their web sites, complete with specific high and low temperatures,
cloud cover, and precipitation.
About this I say, web surfer BEWARE. Yes, it is possible one to two weeks out to, in
many cases, identify trends - perhaps a change from a dry to wet pattern or the arrival
of Arctic air. But it's misleading to suggest that specifics can be timed down to the
day that far in advance. For example, say you're interested in the weather for your
birthday on January 30. On January 15, you check the 15-day forecast. When you check
back on January 20, you'd very likely find the forecast has changed, probably
significantly. When you check back again on the 25th, you'd likely see another
big change.
I fall back on the official statement of the American Meteorological Society on
this subject:
"Claims of skillful predictions of day-to-day weather changes
beyond a week or two have no scientific basis and are either misinformed or calculated
misrepresentations of true capabilities."
