THURSDAY DECEMBER 20 - THE PYRAMIDS

Winter officially arrives tomorrow at 221 p.m. EST, the so-called winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. Many ancient peoples built tombs, temples, or sacred observatories to, in some way, relate to the celestial alignments on the winter solstice.

Speaking of ancient structures, the most famous of all, and the only surviving ancient wonder of the world, is the Great Pyramid of Giza outside modern Cairo, Egypt. Though not celestial in purpose, it was built around 2700 B.C. and is about 450 feet high and 750 feet on each side.

That's plenty large enough to be seen from space. Here is the Great Pyramid and two others nearby as captured by astronauts onboard the space station. Here's an even clearer view taken from a privately-owned satellite in orbit about 400 miles up. Perhaps even King Tut would have been impressed.
