Tornadoes aren't very common around here. In the last 20 years, only 8 twisters have been reported in New Castle County, 11 in Kent County, and 5 in Philadelphia County.

But of all days, today, May 31st, is one for the history books for tornadoes in this part of the country. Just two years ago on this date, more than 20 twisters touched down in Pennsylvania. The strongest, with winds exceeding 150 mph, caused 7 injuries and damaged or destroyed about 40 homes in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Tornadoes also touched down in Chester, Lancaster, and Philadelphia counties that day, but none were reported in the state of Delaware.

Going further back, to this date in 1985, 21 tornadoes struck Pennsylvania, causing 65 fatalities. One tornado packed winds estimated at 300mph, making it the strongest tornado ever recorded in Pennsylvania, Delaware, or New Jersey.
