By Sarah Matthews
WHYY's first-ever weekend line-up for children, the Bookworm Bunch, will debut Sunday, October 1 at 7 a.m. The Bookworm Bunch is a three-hour block of six shows, each based on a popular children's book series. The programs are targeted for preschool-aged children, ages two to seven.
Based on two books by Dan Freeman, Corduroy is the story of a well-known teddy bear who explores his urban surroundings with Lisa, his African American friend.
A child's playroom is the perfect home for Elliot Moose and his friends as they cover a wide range of fantasy themes, from sailing in a pirate ship to flying through outer space. Elliot Moose is a part live-action, part animated series based on the book by Andrea Beck, artist, illustrator and author.
George may only be three inches tall, but that doesn't mean he shies away from a challenge. George Shrinks, by author William Joyce, encourages self-acceptance and creative solutions to seemingly impossible tasks.
Marvin The Tap Dancing Horse tells the story of Eddy Largo, a nine-year old who takes a summer job at the local carnival where he meets the animal stars of the show, including Marvin, and learns he can communicate with them. Based on the book by Betty and Michael Paraskevas, Marvin highlights the value of true friendship as Marvin and Eddy become the best of friends.
The Seven Little Monsters are a family of children who are like many kids -- they go to school, do their chores, support and love each other. But unlike other kids, every member of this family is over 10 feet tall. Based on Maurice Sendak's book, Seven Little Monsters encourages ethical behavior and cooperation.
Timothy, by author Rosemary Wells, tells the story of the bashful five-year-old boy who is discovering the world and his place in it. Timothy teaches children about social diversity while preparing them for school.
