American Experience "FDR"

Monday, May 12 at 9 p.m.

Award-winning filmmaker David Grubin offers an incisive, often startling portrait of Franklin Delano Roosevelt - one of the most extraordinary personalities ever elected to the presidency. The two-part series (Part 2 airs Monday, May 19 at 9 p.m.) includes archival film, home movies and audio clips; newly-filmed footage of significant landmarks in FDR's life; an album of family photographs; and interviews with family members, friends and witnesses to history.


Frontline "Storm Over Everest"

Tuesday, May 13 at 9 p.m.

World-renowned climber and filmmaker David Breashears returns to Mount Everest to tell the story of a 1996 storm that resulted in the worst climbing tragedy in Everest's history. The film combines breathtaking new footage, dramatic recreations of the storm conditions of May 1996 and interviews with the climbers who survived the harrowing ordeal to evaluate the decisions that ultimately lead to the death of five climbers on the side of this unforgiving mountain.


SS United States: Lady in Waiting

Thursday, May 15 at 9 p.m.

More than 10 years in the making, this new documentary tells the fascinating story of America's once-great ocean liner, from its status as a mid-20th century technological and design marvel to a largely-forgotten relic. The SS United States Conservancy granted filmmakers unprecedented access to the ship, which is now moored and seemingly derelict at a pier in Philadelphia, to examine her current state and explore the concept that she might again sail the seas.


Terry Gross Interviews Gwen Ifill

Friday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m.

It's a meeting of two great minds as Fresh Air's Terry Gross interviews Gwen Ifill, moderator and managing editor of Washington Week and senior correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Gross and Ifill shared the spotlight during the 7th Annual President's Dinner, when corporate and community leaders gathered at the WHYY Technology Center to honor Ifill as she received the 2008 WHYY Lifelong Learning Award.
