In 1890s immigrants from the Russian Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire settled in Philadelphia. Their first concern was to found an Orthodox Church. These impassioned immigrants were assisted in founding their house of worship by a small group of Russian naval officers who came to live in Philadelphia to work at Cramp's Shipyard on the construction of a new type of Cruiser for Russia's fleet. They joined the immigrants in the holy task of founding a parish and building a temple in honor of the holy Apostle Andrew and the First Called, who is also the Patron Saint of the Russian Navy. After a few years of temporary settings, Saint Andrews's parish was consecrated in 1902. |
