Beth Sholom Synagogue was founded in Logan in 1919 where the congregation built its first school and synagogue. In 1953 the renowned American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, was invited by the Beth Sholom Congregation of Philadelphia to design a new synagogue in the suburbs of Elkin's Park. The present Beth Sholom Sanctuary in Elkin's Park was complete in 1959. The building evokes an image of a mountain with a main sanctuary that seats 1,020. It has been called a replica of Mt. Sinai in modern materials of concrete, steel, aluminum and glass. Historically, Mt. Sinai was the location God chose to reveal His Torah to Moses for Israel and for mankind. |
