WHYY in 1978 leases from the City of Philadelphia for $1 a year the Living History Center on Independence Mall, a museum built for the Bicentennial. That same year, PBS, the first broadcast network to launch its own satellite system, links its stations nationwide. In February 1979, WHYY moves its headquarters to Independence Mall. By April 1983, WHYY's administration and radio and TV production and broadcasting divisions are headquartered on the Mall.
