1957: WHYY-TV signs on in September

On September 16, 1957, WHYY-TV signs on as Channel 35, an educational station broadcasting instructional programs for the School District of Philadelphia to classrooms, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Its call letters are an acronym for "Wider Horizons for You and Yours." WHYY is the 23rd public television station in the country. Richard Burdick is the first General Manager.
