Al
Martino in Concert
In
this vintage 1976 concert, one of Philadelphia's most accomplished
and well-recognized entertainers performs the songs that continue
to define his career -- including
his breakthrough 1952 hit "Here in My Heart" and 1965's
"Spanish Eyes" -- with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra
in Alberta, Canada's Jubilee Auditorium. Martino entertains
the audience with such romantic standards as "Quando, Quando,
Quando," "I Gotta Be Me" and "Strangers
in the Night" and concludes the concert with "Speak
Softly Love," the theme from the Academy Award-winning
film The Godfather, in which he played Johnny Fontane.

Wildwood
Days
Miami-based
filmmaker Carolyn Travis takes a nostalgic look at the New Jersey
beach town where she spent her childhood summers, celebrating
the neon-lit,
1950s motels, pizza parlors and boardwalk amusements that won
a place in the hearts of countless visitors. Dismayed to discover
that many of her favorite places were slowly disappearing, Travis
spent the summer of 2003 documenting the last vestiges of Wildwood's
heyday. Helping to tell the story of Wildwood's rise, fall and
revival are some famous fans -- including Jerry Blavat, Bobby
Rydell, Bruce Willis and Chubby Checker, who "twisted"
for the first time in Wildwood -- and the regular folks who
frequented the beach and boardwalk scenes. Photo

Carolyn Travis talks about the joys of making this retrospective
documentary and shares some of her favorite Wildwood memories.
In
Search of Atlantic City
This
vintage WHYY production visits with lifelong residents of Atlantic
City, who share their memories of growing up amidst the excitement
of this famous New Jersey resort town, once the premier getaway
for wealthy vacationers. The program blends archival photographs
and film footage with fond memories of frolicking along the
boardwalk and boogying to the sounds of jazz greats Duke Ellington
and Louie Armstrong at Steel Pier. The residents also discuss
the periods of depression and attempts to revive this once-elegant
community and speculate on its future, which now seems to depend
on casino traffic and performances by big-named entertainers.
