Back in the 1960's — the dark ages — the saying "you are what you eat" referred to eating whole foods. Being a child of the 60's and 70's I remember exercising in gym class at Rhawnhurst Elementary to a record Chicken Fat and running track to Mr. Scholnick's stopwatch. Mom made dinners of comfort food: homemade meatloaf, macaroni and cheese from scratch, there was the salad, and veggies, and not a lot of fried food. We had the occasional Tastykake, soda was a treat, as was a burger at the Golden Arches popping up in neighborhoods everywhere then.


Decades later, our nation is fighting the effects of a fast food fixation. There are so many studies pointing to obesity leading to diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and other ailments. Jefferson cardiologist Dr. Sharon Rubin believes obesity is the greatest health challenge facing people in the U.S.
