Welcome to the Learning Lab at WHYY

The Learning Lab at WHYY will be both physical, a facility where local organizations will enhance and expand their work through digital technologies, and virtual, a digital connectivity service that will link people and organizations throughout the region in ways never before possible.

WHYY has already raised funds to construct the Learning Lab building behind the station's headquarters on Independence Mall. Serving citizens throughout the Delaware Valley, the Learning Lab will be the place where organizations and individuals come to learn production from production experts and to discover new ways to connect to their community. A community center for the digital age, the Learning Lab will stage performances and town meetings equally accessible to live audiences and home participants.

Between April and September 2002, WHYY conducted a planning study to determine how the Learning Lab could meet community needs. As the Learning Lab concept was introduced to community groups and individuals throughout the region, overwhelming interest in the lab's services surfaced over and over again. Responding to what the community said it wants and needs, WHYY designed Learning Lab programs to benefit all of Greater Philadelphia.

Teachers will learn to incorporate video and the Internet into their classrooms. Community organizations will extend their reach through video production and digital communications. Students will have access to the regionis best performers and cultural attractions without leaving their classrooms. Job seekers at local job centers and employees at local companies will have immediate access to the best interactive training materials from their desktop PCs. Digital art will find a home on the large screen displays in the Learning lab's lobby. Representatives of all sectors of the region, from education to public interest to arts and culture to business, will come together at the Lab to collaborate on innovative projects.
