A Holocaust Remembrance is an award-winning documentary about the vibrant community of Eastern European Jews which was virtually destroyed by the Holocaust. Their rich and varied culture evolved over hundreds of years. Then, in an instant, it nearly perished. Listen to the living heritage of that "lost world" expressed in literature, in music, and in the words of actual survivors. Listen to their deeply moving stories of life before the war and of its sudden and brutal end. The program is built around a recital of the names of some of the millions who died. Share the stories of those who survived, and their hope that -- in telling the tale -- it will not be forgotten.
The complete program will be aired on Thursday, April 23rd at 12 PM, and Sunday, April 26th at 1 PM. If your computer is equipped with RealAudio software, click on any of these three titles to listen to an excerpt. (Don't have the software? Download it!) 1. Celebration - Before the Nazi invasion, there was a thriving Jewish culture in Eastern Europe, finding creative expression in the arts, music, theatre, and literature and firmly rooted in religious tradition. 2. Destruction - During World War II, Jewish people and other groups were tormented, isolated, and transported to camps where millions of men, women, and children died or were murdered. 3. Recollection - Survivors revere the memory of those lost in the Holocaust, and reflect on its present and future meaning for humankind.
