After-School

Welcome to WHYY Afterschool: A Youth Project of the Hamilton Commons at WHYY
The Afterschool program incorporates video production training, media literacy, and community activism, as students create videos on a topic important to them and their communities. Through the video production process, the youth learn to view media critically and develop the leadership, team-building, and creative skills needed for 21st-century success.

Philadelphia Phirsts: Philadelphia Zoo
Watch the video
Philadelphia is the birthplace of the constitution, the cheesesteak, and the soft pretzel, but not many people realize that the City of Brotherly Love is home to America's first zoo. Our students visit the Philadelphia Zoo to film the wildlife, and conduct interviews to find out about the extraordinary people who founded the zoo over 150 years ago.

Produced by: William Hung, Sandy Sovann, Benette Weiss, Aneesah Green, Brielle Pinzini, Katie Johnson.

Northeast High: 3,600 Students and One Uniform
Watch the video
What happens when America's 3rd largest public school decides that all of its 3,600 students should wear the same thing everyday? In this short documentary Learning Lab students get the answers.

Produced by: Halmar Vargas, Kevin Shui, Marvin Fequiere, Bryan Quinde, Brian Tran, Alexander Lamothe, Ashley Gonzalez, Jackie Mangini.

Dancing in Philly
Watch the video
What makes people dance? This film follows a student run hip-hop dance club that meets every week in the school cafeteria. Learning Lab students interviewed and filmed these exceptional dancers to find out what motivates them to dance, and to document the different dance names and styles that are currently popular. These artists explain why they can't help themselves from dancing everywhere, from the classroom to the park, and in the streets.

Produced by: Sydney Bynum, Jasmine Montebon, Sherif Strickler, Sierra Boyd, Seth Parker-Neal, Gabriel Nieto, Matthew Liggeons-Jones, Nehimah H. Mondesir.
