Quick Review: Chow Yun-Fat, best known here for his double-fisted blazing pistols in a series of John Woo movies (THE KILLER, GOD OF THE GAMBLERS), is mainly a cult figure in America but more famous than Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford put together in Asia. He has a quiet intensity and grace that separates him from the other Asian action movie stars. Mira Sorvino is a theater-trained actress with a strong sense of character development. Perhaps that's why THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS seems to have more class than the other films in this genre. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the script to go along with all that class, so you end up with intriguing performances in a predictable story. It resembles a bad joke about Chinese restaurant food: It's the kind of picture that's enjoyable but you can't remember what you liked about it when it's over.
Rating (on a four-star scale):
Interview with Mira Sorvino.
