The American President

Director: Rob Reiner
Producer: Rob Reiner
Executive Producers: Jeffrey Stott, Charles Newirth
Screenwriter: Aaron Sorkin
Cast: Michael Douglas, Annette Bening, Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, Richard Dreyfuss, David Paymer

Quick Review: The best romantic comedy of 1995. From the opening shot that follows Michael Douglas as the President from the family quarters of the White House through hallways and offices, picking up the supporting players along the way to the final, hokey-but-touching press conference, this is a delight. Part of the cast list should be the White House itself. As cynical as we all are about Washington and politicians, there is still a glamour and sense of pride associated with the old place. Rob Reiner threw off his one artistic failure (North) and once again finds just the right balance between the humor of seeing power close up in all of its human imperfection and the romance embodied in those sparkling Annette Bening eyes. It's everything Sabrina wanted to be and wasn't.
