Exploring the great outdoors

By: Tamara Johns, Children's Service Intern

June is a time for summer fun and is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. Why not enjoy all of the wonderful glories that nature has to offer in June with someone special like DAD. June is Great Outdoors month and June 21 is Father's Day, so make June about enjoying that outdoors with dad. Fathers and the great outdoors have so many things to offer and to teach us, but too many times we are to busy to recognize and appreciate these things. The show It's A Big, Big World takes place in the World Tree which is a metaphor for the world as a whole and explores science, nature and geography in a fun way, and introduces kids to the concept that the world is bigger than what kids just see around them. Kids will be able to explore parts of the great outdoors on the show and then take what they learn outdoors with dad. So encourage your kids to explore the great outdoors and spend time with dad or that special male figure in their life so they can let him know how special he is.

DO

Pack a picnic lunch with your dad's favorite foods and head to a national park for lunch or early dinner.

Instead of spending the day inside go out for a bike ride on one the bike trails in the city. Plan a dad and kids camping trip. This will be a great time for kids and dads to spend quality time with each other and experience new things together. If going to an actual camp site is not feasible pitch a tent in the backyard and explore the great outdoors close to you.

Draw, paint or color a picture of your favorite thing to do with dad outside to be displayed in the house or at his place of work.
