More TV viewing tips
We all know that unlimited television viewing is not good practice for a child's physical, social or intellectual development. In addition to how much time a child watches television, we need to pay close attention to what she is watching.
When used with planning and discrimination, good television, like a good book, can add a wealth of learning. Here are a few tips to make television viewing beneficial to learning:
Give your children a limit on how much television they should watch each day or week. Explain to them why they need to engage in a variety of activities to stimulate their minds and bodies.
Then, rather than turning the television on when they're bored, they should select in advance programs they want to watch. Sit down with your child and open your TV guide or Applause magazine to select programs. You might be surprised at how even younger children are reasonable and understanding when you empower them with choices!
When your child has finished watching, discuss what he learned, and what he liked most. Better still, create an activity that builds on that experience.
