ACTIVITIES IN TWO LANGUAGES:
Mister Rogers Recycles
Tune in to Mister Rogers Neighborhood for a whole week of environmental tips from Monday, April 19 to Friday, April 23 at 1 p.m. on WHYY-TV12. The programs provide a wonderful opportunity to talk about conservation and recycling, and to create art projects and even toys from used items. On Tuesday, your children can join Mister Rogers as he visits a recycling center where they can see what happens to discarded bags, bottles and cans. On Wednesday, Mr. McFeely brings a film of his visit with Leo Sewell who makes sculptures from discarded material.
On Friday, Mister Rogers uses a discarded box to make a television puppet show for homemade puppets. Creating a television stage can help children develop creative play skills while they learn more about conservation.
Recycling Projects
Materials: Assorted discarded items such as paper towel rolls, plastic milk caps, string, ribbon, used wrapping paper, empty boxes; glue; scissors.
Begin this activity by talking with the children about ways they can reuse or recycle used materials. If your children are old enough, suggest that each child create something from what you've collected. Or show them how to create a collage, a sculpture or storage bins.
