Classroom Technology Training

Approach: In addition, the high school interns visit each middle school class every week and assist the teacher in technology instruction. In the beginning of the year, the technology instruction covers the basics such as Microsoft Windows, Word and Excel. By the end of the year, the students will know how to publish their reseach and conclusions on the web.

Partners: Electric Schoolhouse, DCANet, Americorps Kickstart Program, Urban Technology Project, Public Allies of Delaware

Technical Training Activities: In order for the students and families to fully take advantage of the technology in this project, it is expected that they receive technology training throughout the year. In the beginning of the year, the students will probably need weekly trainings that will coincide with the weekly technical support sessions. Later in the year, the training session will probably decrease to once per month for a total of about 20 training sessions. The sessions should probably start with the fundamentals in Windows, Word, Excel, Internet and Email and then move into web page development once the students are comfortable with the technology. The total cost of 20 1 hour training sessions with 2 hours prep time is calculated to be 60 hours per class or approximately $20 per computer at $10 per hour. In addition, the technical trainer should plan on at least 2 2-hour parent training activities in the evening with 3 hour prep to total approximately 10 hours or $3 per computer. Lastly, training materials are calculated at $7 per computer per year and the supervisor is expected to meet with the technicians 10 times throughout the year to discuss training and will receive an additional $5 per computer.

Students will gain knowledge concerning basic computer use. In addition, the skills that students gain from the lessons presented by the technical support person will allow them to complete modules and assignments given by their teachers. Also, students can use the skills that they have learned in order to participate in other technology related educational projects and build a web page that communicates what they have learned to others.

In addition to the above considerations for technical training, the technical training person must also have access to a computer lab that has at least 1 computer for every 2 students. In this lab there must be multiple printers and some kind of big screen monitor or presentation device.

Suggestions & Questions - Training should consist of between 10 and 20 sessions. The sessions should start out weekly and could slowly go to monthly. Where will support & training take place? If it took place somewhere else, would there be an additional cost?

The computer lab should have at least one computer for every two students. The lab should also have Internet access for all of the computers and should be running the same software that is on the computers at home. Do you have access to a lab for training? Could you go to a local school or community center for training? Would the school charge you?
