The Education Connection Project

Workforce Development Technology Support and Training
September Weekend Computer Delivery

Approach: Within the first few weeks of school, the computers will be delivered to middle school students and their families on a specific Saturday or Sunday. In an assembly-line like experience, every student and their parent will be trained in the use of their computer before being able to take it home that day.

Partners: Electric Schoolhouse, DCANet, Americorps Kickstart Program, Urban Technology Project, Public Allies of Delaware

Delivery Day Activities: In September, each class will be assigned a weekend when a short training for the students and their parents will take place and the computers will be delivered. The primary support person for the class will be responsible for coordinating the event that will involve at least 6 people. One person will be responsible for noting who has come in and what computer # they took when they left. One person will be responsible for training the families on setting up the computer. One person will be responsible for demonstrating to the families how to get onto the Internet and use email. And three people will be responsible for actually letting the students get onto their computer in order to send an email to the primary support person and to themselves (the email to themselves is sent in order to test that their computer is working). Throughout the day, families will be given appointments at one hour intervals when they can come by and get their training and pick up their computer.

In additional to personnel considerations for the delivery day, the primary support person must also consider the site capabilities. It is recommended that the site be located in the cafeteria, gymnasium or other large room with access to electrical outlets and at least three phone/fax lines. These phone lines can frequently be found in the school office (fax machine) or nurses office. Lastly, at least 3 tables will needed in order to set up at least 3 stations for computer setup, email demonstration, and email and computer testing.

$10 per computer should be reserved for personnel on this day. In addition, $5 per computer should be reserved for materials.

Suggestions & Questions - The all-day weekend activity is an intense and complicated project. Make sure that there are at least 8 staff members for a class of 30 students to be instructing on computer setup, basic windows and email usage, and sitting down with the student to send him or herself an email to guarentee that the computer is working. Do you have access to the necessary staff? Are there analog phone lines available to test the comuters?
