The Education Connection Project

Content
Teacher Collaboration

Approach: But before any students get academic activities, teachers from St Thomas the Aspostle, St Paul, Drew-Pyle and Seaford Middle Schools begin their training in August before schools starts. Throughout the year, teachers participate in a listserv and meet every month to discuss classroom issues and new techniques and activties.

Partners: Math and Science Educational Resource Center, The Electric Schoolhouse, The Delaware Law Related Education Center, The University of Delaware Internship Program.

Teacher Training Activities: Electric Schoolhouse and the Mathematics and Science Resource Center will be providing professional development activities as part of the five regularly scheduled teacher meetings throughout the year. In addition, the professional development activities will be supplemented with online listservs.

Teacher Training Activties are still being developed for this coming year. Last year the Education Connection Project participated in the following standards-based activities:

  • With the help of Electric Schoolhouse, every parent in the project has been offered an initial training in the use of the computers this year. In addition, the Seaford classroom held a parent technical support meeting in November.
  • Electric Schoolhouse provided 1 full day of training to the 5th and 6th grade students in the use of the Internet and the web-based Electric Schoolhouse software. In addition, Electric Schoolhouse provided parents with the opportunity to receive brief training on their computers, the Internet and the Electric Schoolhouse software before receiving their computers.

Suggestions & Questions: The teachers also need to meet on a regular basis to discuss this drastic change in their teaching environment. In the case of the Education Connection Project, The University of Delaware was hired to assist the teachers in monthly professional development meetings. Do your teachers now meet to discuss content and student issues? Could they incorporate their new issues into the old meetings or would an outside organization need to be hired?
