Family Outreach Activities
Approach: Outside of the classroom, family outreach in the past has been anything from parent focus group meetings to family technical support sessions. The future holds promise for these sessions as we better integrate them with public policy issues, governmental and community services, and early childhood and parenting Public Television Programing.
Partners: Math and Science Educational Resource Center, The Electric Schoolhouse, The Delaware Law Related Education Center, The University of Delaware Internship Program.
Integrated Family Outreach: Although not fully implemented in the Education Connection Project due to funding constraints, it is the intention of the project that classroom content be designed to involve the family in some way. For example, a multi-cultural activities could involve asking the parents about family stories.
This coming year the Education Connection Project will be participating in the following standards-based activities:
- As was the case last year, The Education Connection Project will be collaborating with the Delaware Law Related Education Center in order to participate in a student summit in order to propose a specific public policy initiative. New to this coming year, the Education Connection Project will be developing a new online activity that will involve the family and will be used in conjunction with the student summit
Classroom Technology: The Education Connection approach is to use a low-cost technique of ensuring that technology exists in the home while judiciously spending limited resources in the school. Specifically, every school is designed to have Internet access in a computer lab in addition to at least one computer with Internet access in every classroom. The classroom computer, in addition to a digital camera, scanner and printer is to be used mainly for web page design, classroom presentations, printing out of homework assignments, and in-school and after-school projects.
Presently, each classroom involved in the Education Connection has received a variety of equipment. A 31" monitor is used for display. A color printer is used for projects and papers that students have created at home and saved on disk, and images generated using the scanner and digital camera will be used in creating the classroom web site. This year, the classrooms have requested a second printer to be used in each classroom.
