The Education Connection Project

Content Development & Activities

Approach: The WHYY Education Connection has developed over the past four years 8 actvities that teachers can use to get their students started using their computers at home while learning standards-based mathematics and science concepts. But as soon as students and teachers feel comfortable, the project asks the classrooms to participate in a statewide activity coordinated by the Delaware Law Related Education Center where students are asked to research a public policy topic using their home-based technology in order to make recommendations to their state legislature during a student summit. In the future, the project will begin to develop new instructional tools in collaboration with the WHYY Public television news broadcast in order to better involve the parents in local policy decision issues.

Partners: Math and Science Educational Resource Center, The Electric Schoolhouse, The Delaware Law Related Education Center, The University of Delaware Internship Program.

Standards-based Activities: This year, the Math & Science Center will be working with the teachers to finish up the 8 lessons. In addition, they will be adding an assessment component as requested by the National Education Connection Partners as well as a method for teachers to adapt their own standards-based educational activities to this project's technology.

This coming year the Education Connection Project will be participating in the following standards-based activities:

  • The Education Connection will be developing its own experimental online content in collaboration with the Delaware Law Related Education Center and the State of Delaware as part of a student summit last year.

Suggestions & Questions: The Education Connection gives some of its teachers' stipends to develop and test activities that everyone can use as part of the project. Furthermore, because it is associated with the schools, the activities must match the state standards? Do you have anyone capable of developing activities that would take advantage of the home-based technologies? Is there a cost associated with this?
