United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania Sponsors Welfare Reform Forum In Philadelphia

Event to provide opportunity for discussion of welfare policies

What: Forum to discuss the first five years of welfare reform in the state of Pennsylvania. The focus will be on the new and emerging policies affecting families who have received welfare for five years. The forum will also seek to obtain a better understanding the policies and politics surrounding federal reauthorization of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).

Details:The fifth year of welfare reform in Pennsylvania--and the rest of the nation--is drawing to a close. The next phase of welfare reform will bring many changes as Pennsylvania implements its five-year policies and as Congress debates reauthorization.

United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania is sponsoring a forum on welfare reform to allow us to look beyond this first five years, and to the partnerships that are necessary to create a strong and healthy community. The forum will be held on Friday, October 5, 2001, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the studios of WHYY, Independence Mall West, 150 North Sixth Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106.

Feather Houstoun, Pennsylvania's Welfare Secretary; Christine James-Brown, President and CEO, United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania; Robert Greenstein, Executive Director, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Washington, D.C.; and Ernest Jones, President and CEO, Philadelphia Workforce Development Corporation will all take part in the forum.

The forum will provide an opportunity for discussion about Pennsylvania's welfare policies, with a focus on the new and emerging policies affecting families who have received welfare for five years. We will also seek to better understand the policies and politics surrounding federal reauthorization of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
