Couple Married 77 Years To Be Honored At Wedding Shower

He's 99, she's 100, and they've been married 77 years.

Dalvin and Virginia Shiner of Sicklerville, NJ, winners of WHYY's longest-married-couple competition, will be honored at a Wedding Shower, Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the WHYY Technology Center, 150 N. Sixth Street in Philadelphia.

The Shiners, who celebrated their 77th anniversary January 1, 2002 will enjoy a champagne toast and gifts. Also honored will be Shirley and Samuel Dowburd of Elkins Park, PA, married 72 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Shiner will appear live on WHYY-TV's Wedding Day Saturday, March 16 between 6:30 and 7 p.m. to participate in a symbolic renewal of their wedding vows. Beginning at 1:30 p.m. on WHYY, programming will offer wedding-theme programs and thank you gifts.

The Shiners are winners of WHYY's longest married couple competition that was announced on Valentine's Day. The more than 100 entries received included several couples that have enjoyed each other's company for more than 70 years.

WHYY-TV Wedding Day programming begins with food for the wedding. Yan Can Cook at 1:30 p.m., Lidia's Italian Table at 2:15 p.m. and Baking With Julia and Martha Stewart at 3:15 p.m. offer delectable wedding delicacies. Royal Wedding Bells, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. takes a behind-the-scenes look at the weddings of Britain's Elizabeth and Philip, Charles and Diana and Andrew and Fergie.

WHYY's Marsha Corcoran and wedding planner Phyllis Richard ("Your Fairy Godmother") will host the day's programs.

Anyone who becomes a member that afternoon is eligible to have their upcoming wedding announced during the broadcast. Special wedding-related thank-you gifts will be available including an offer by Chef Jim Coleman to plan the wedding menu for up to three couples, complimentary engagement party catering from Catering by Design, sessions at Topper's Spa, wedding dress accessories from Suky Rosan and a Nicole Miller gift basket.

"The search for the longest-married couple is one more way WHYY connects with our community," said Craig Hamilton, Executive Director of Development. "It's also symbolic of the long-term relationships we are able to build with our members who support the station year after year."
