Making Sense of the Virginia Tech Killings

It has been said that grief is like the rope burns left behind when something has been pulled from your grasp. This came to mind as I was watching the coverage of the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech.

The families of the students who were murdered lost their loved ones.  Their fellow students lost their friends.  And many of the rest of us lost the sense of security we may have had yesterday.  And in the wake of such horror, we are left with many questions about how this could have happened and whether it could have been prevented.  But perhaps the most lingering question will be "what does all of this mean and how can I make sense of it?"

We hope the programs we offer on this website will help you find comfort, guidance and a sense of community. -Dr. Dan Gottlieb

Scary News
Listen via Real Audio
Earthquakes, hurricanes, bombings: the news has been filled with disasters lately, and we see pictures of death and destruction on a daily basis. Children are often far more exposed to these scary news than their parents realize, and have strong reactions to the coverage. How can parents limit their children's exposure to media, and how can they help them sort through the messages? Dan Gottlieb's guest is Lorna Knox, author of "Scary News: 12 Ways to raise Joyful Children When the Headlines are Full of Fear."

Bearing Witness - Trauma and Youth Violence
Listen via Real Audio
The tragic school shooting in Littleton, Colorado has left most of us in shock and disbelief. Even after Littleton and last year's series of school shootings it seems unfathomable that children can turn into vicious killers. Dr. Sandy Bloom and Dr. Michael Reichert take a new approach at explaining youth violence in their new book "Bearing Witness." They discuss the social and psychological issues leading to youth violence, and argue that we must address the problem as a community that fosters peace and safety. We will also hear from young Philadelphians who joined efforts to end youth violence after last year's school shootings. Originally aired 5/10/99

A Grief Like No Other
Listen via Real Audio | mp3
A violent death brings a different kind of grief to the surviving family members and loved ones. Those left behind may experience intense feelings of guilt, anger, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and years of dealing with legal ramifications. Philadelphia therapist Kathleen O'Hara knows both sides of this coin: As a therapist, she has counseled many people through this kind of grief. As a mother, she saw her worst nightmare realized when her college-age son Aaron was murdered on Memorial Day, 1999. In her new book, "A Grief Like No Other" O'Hara recalls her own journey after Aaron's death, and offers guidance and steps for families and friends who are grieving. Originally aired 5/22/06
