Proposed Cuts to Public Broadcasting


House appropriators have proposed more than $220 million in funding cuts for public broadcasting in the new fiscal year. These cuts represent 45% of federal financial support of public television and radio.


The proposed cuts include:

  • Proposed reduction of general station support for FY 2006 -- $100 million.
  • Proposed elimination of the Ready To Learn Program -- $23 million.
  • No new funding for digital conversion-- $79 million.
  • Less money for other initiatives-- $ 21 million.
