Presidential Conversations on the Constitution

WHYY is producing a four-part national television and radio series featuring interviews with past presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, to be distributed nationally for broadcast on public television and radio stations across the country this fall.

Conducted by award-winning journalist Cokie Roberts, these unprecedented interviews will examine the pivotal, and very personal, relationship between the president and the Constitution and address how this 216-year-old document influenced the decisions each made while in the executive office.

The series will also demonstrate how one document can stand the test of time and reinterpretation by leaders who are bound by its requirements, but facing vastly different challenges, and explore the implications this has for us as a nation today, and in the future. The series, produced in partnership with the National Constitution Center, will be accompanied by educational material for thousands of schools across the country.

The series is made possible in part by the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation and by Bank One.

The First Amendment in the New Millennium

The First Amendment in the New Millennium, the first content event to be held at the National Constitution Center, will focus on key issues such as the right to privacy in the face of national security concerns and free expression on and across the Internet. The program, moderated by Michele Norris, one of National Public Radio's rotating All Things Considered hosts, will be broadcast on WHYY-TV September 17, 2003, which is Constitution Day.

Panelists are:

  • First Amendment expert Floyd Abrams
  • Marci A. Hamilton, Thomas H. Lee Chair of Public Law, Benjamin N. Cardozo Law School, Yeshiva University
  • Solomon Watson, Senior Vice President and General Counsel, The New York Times
  • Seth P. Waxman, former Solicitor General of the United States

Audience members will include lawyers, judges, business, civic and community leaders.

The event is sponsored by the Philadelphia Bar Association, WHYY and the National Constitution Center, and is made possible by PNC Financial Services and USI Colburn Insurance Service.
