The Philadelphia Orchestra, WHYY, and Mann Center to present special Tribute Concert Sunday evening, September 16 at 7 p.m. at Mann Center

Musical tribute to victims of September 11 to be broadcast live on WHYY-TV 12 and WHYY-FM 90.9

(Philadelphia, September 14, 2001) - The Philadelphia Orchestra, WHYY, and the Mann Center will present a special, free Tribute Concert on Sunday evening, September 16. The free 90-minute concert at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Fairmount Park will begin at 7:00 p.m. (NOTE: Please note the time change from earlier announcements.) Parking will be free, and special SEPTA buses will operate an enhanced schedule. More information will be posted soon.

The Tribute Concert will be broadcast live on WHYY-TV 12, WHYY-FM 90.9, and whyy.org, and will be made available to public television and radio stations nationwide. The television host will be WHYY's Tracey Matisak.

Sunday's concert pays tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragedies of September 11. The producing organizations have come together for this concert believing in the ability of music to help people grieve and reflect, and to reaffirm the human spirit.

The concert will feature The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Philadelphia Singers, and several guest artists and ensembles, including gospel works with the Wilmington Chester Mass Choir. Musical selections will include Aaron Cop-land's Fanfare for the Common Man, Samuel Barber's Adagio (for strings), Randall Thompson's Alleluia (for a cappella chorus), Bach's Sheep May Safely Graze (as arranged for orchestra by Leopold Stokowski), Brahms's "How Lovely Art Thy Dwelling Place," and the fourth movement from Brahms's Symphony No. 1. The concert will conclude with Pat Croce leading the assembled musicians and audience in singing "America the Beautiful."

No tickets will be required for this free concert. Gates will open at 6:00 pm and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The public will be invited to make contributions to the American Red Cross and The Twin Towers Emergency Fund (set up by the Police and Fire Commissioners of Philadelphia for the rescue workers and their families). Donations will be accepted at the concert.

All musicians, staff, and subcontractors of The Philadelphia Orchestra, WHYY and The Mann Center involved in the concert are donating their time, including members of the American Federation of Musicians Local 77, members of IATSE Local 8, and members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98.

Plans for the concert and broadcast resulted from discussions between Orchestra President Joseph H. Kluger and WHYY President and CEO William J. Marrazzo. "Music is one of the most powerful forces in bringing people together to grieve, reflect, and find inspiration to move forward," said Marrazzo. "We are particularly grateful to everyone involved, both on and off the stage, especially the musicians of the Orchestra, IBEW at WHYY, IATSE at the Mann Center, and all others for donating their time and services for this unprecedented concert."

Updated information on the concert will be available at whyy.org, philorch.org, and manncenter.org or by calling WHYY's member service hotline at 215-351-0511.
