Jim MacMillan: Images of Conflict in Iraq
The program is presented by the Philadelphia Conference and co-sponsored by the Philadelphia Daily News and WHYY. Visit Philadelphia Conference for more information.
MacMillan, who recently returned from a yearlong assignment with the AP in Baghdad, will present his work covering the war. Three of his images were among the 20-picture package that won journalism's greatest honor this year.
From May 2004 until just a few weeks ago, MacMillan lived in the desert capital where car bombings and gunfire were a regular part of the average week. He spent weeks at a time traveling with coalition forces, risking his life alongside soldiers and creating powerful images conveying their experiences.
"Until you've lived through more difficult experiences, you can't understand how good we have it back home," MacMillan recently told the Daily News.
A Boston native, MacMillan joined the Daily News in 1991 after three years at the Times-Leader in Scranton, PA. Prior to that, he worked for a weekly chain of newspapers in Massachusetts and for the Associated Press in Boston. He has won numerous prizes in local, regional and national contests for his images.
"Jim went off to Iraq on a gutsy adventure and ended up winning the Pulitzer Prize," said Daily News editor Michael Days. "What an incredible statement about the excellence of his work, his photography. We couldn't be more proud."
Daily News picture editor Michael Mercanti said, "Winning this award confirms what we at the Daily News have always known. Jim MacMillan is one of the very best photojournalists on the planet."
MacMillan is a founding member of Philadelphia Conference, which is co-sponsoring the event. Philadelphia Conference is an organization comprised of photojournalists and supporters of the visual medium. The organization meets monthly to encourage photographers to push the boundaries of the craft and to show off local talent.
