The Basics on Lupus:

  • Lupus is 4 times greater in African American women than in Caucasian women.

  • Environmental factors that can trigger Lupus include: certain drugs, chemicals, and there is also a theory that viruses can trigger the disease.

  • The incidence of Lupus seems to be increasing in the last 2 decades.

  • Today, there are better treatments for the disease. Therefore the mortality rate among Lupus patients today is much lower than it was in the 1950s.

  • Research is ongoing into the connection between Lupus and heart disease and why some Lupus patients, even after their disease is "quiet", can suffer heart attacks and strokes.
