WHYY and United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania have joined forces in a unique multi-media partnership that crosses all lines of technology : tv, radio and the web, to provide women and their families with immediate and life enhancing information on how to live better and live longer. The campaign, "Healthy Living For Women", is a series of informational spots on women's health. The purpose of this project is to enlighten women about the health issues that should concern them and direct them to the proper resources for help. Each health issue is presented through the personal story of a woman dealing with that particular disease or condition. Additional information is provided by a physician or expert in the field. The ten health topics were identified by United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania and WHYY. They are : Aging; Bone Density (osteoporosis); Breast Cancer; Depression; Diabetes; Domestic Violence; Heart Disease; Hypothyroidism; Lupus; and Nutrition. Each issue is of particular interest to women. For example, the ratio of women suffering from Lupus is 14 to 1, compared to men. 90 to 95% of the people who suffer from Hypothyroidism are women. The majority of people diagnosed with Diabetes are women. The Breast Cancer spot focuses on a support group for African-American women. Breast Cancer kills more African American women than it does Caucasian women. Novella Lyons talks about starting this support group after going to an informational meeting that very few African American women attended. At that meeting, she learned that African American women are dying at a greater rate than Caucasians. The 2 - minute television spots begin airing on WHYY-TV on January 28th. They will rotate throughout normal programming. A series of 10 similar 3 minute spots will air during 91 FM's "Morning Edition with Brenda Jorett", also beginning January 28th.
