The Basics on Hypothyroidism:
- As many as 13 million Americans have a thyroid disease but as many as 8 million may go undiagnosed.
- The symptoms of hypothyroidism and menopause are similar and hypothyroidism may be easily missed.
- Female infants are at a higher risk than males for developing hypothyroidism.
- Hypothyroidism is commonly associated with iron deficiency anemia and respiratory problems.
- Depression is common in hypothyroidism. Adding a thyroid hormone to antidepressants helped speed recovery for some depressed patients, even if they had not been diagnosed as having hypothyroidism.
