The Basics on Diabetes:
- The most common form of Diabetes is known as "Type 2" or "adult onset".
- Half of the people with Type 2 Diabetes aren't aware they have it.
- The symptoms for Type 2 Diabetes include feeling tired or ill, frequent urination (especially at night), unusual thirst, weight loss, blurred vision, frequent infections, and slow healing of sores.
- Diet, exercise and a low-fat diet have been shown to lower the risk of Diabetes.
- Being overweight significantly increases the risk of getting the disease.
- African-Americans have a 60% higher rate than whites; Hispanic Americans have a rate that is 90% higher than whites.
- Complications due to Diabetes can include kidney failure, new onset blindness and heart disease.
- The American Heart Association warns that having Diabetes significantly increases a patient's risk for heart disease.
