African-American religious communities and their leaders have played a remarkable role in shaping the very meaning and practice of the democratic ideals central to American society. This Far by Faith, from the producer of Eyes on the Prize, presents a history of the African-American religious experience told in the context of the nation's struggle to realize the goals of democracy and authentic humanity. It chronicles the tumultuous and inspirational journeys of challenge and transformation for two centuries of women and men engaged in struggles on behalf of, and emerging out of, their faith.

Linking the past and present, faith and activism, the series provides a platform for contemporary debate over the role of faith and faith communities today and in the future, as America continues to grapple with issues of diversity and hardship, freedom and citizenship, courage, conviction, morality and democracy. The very first of six episodes contains a story that addresses troubled youth who are struggling with the question of their worthiness in society, linking thematically with the historical stories of Denmark Vesey and Sojourner Truth.

Support materials for use by clergy and lay leaders prior to, during and following the This Far By Faith broadcast are available on the website of the series producer at www.blackside.com and in January 2002, at www.pbs.org.
