Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit The son of a former slave and an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) bishop, Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937) grew up in Philadelphia just after the Civil War, part of an educated and cultured African American family. Tanner went on to become a critically acclaimed and prize-winning artist in the United States and France. Bringing his greatest works together for the first time in a generation, Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit presents Tanner as an American artist of international stature, and explores the important influences of late 19th century popular religion and the lessons of the AME Church; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) instructors, such as Thomas Eakins; European Orientalism; modern technological and artistic developments; and World War I on Tanner's life and work.
